OBJECTIVES
- To investigate complaints related to violations of journalists’ and media practitioners’ rights as defined in the Act and recommend to government of Sindh and appropriate course of action against the perpetrators of these violations.
- To be a catalyst for improvement in relevant laws and policies that protect press freedom and journalists’ rights including Sindh Act No. XX of 2021 and UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and Issue of Impunity.
- To develop a comprehensive support mechanism for journalists and other media practitioners in Sindh, including Emergency Protection Assistance, Free Legal Aid (representation and counsel), Relocation, Financial Assistance and Psychosocial Counseling.
- To develop a network of safety focal persons from public/private organizations across Sindh to monitor and respond to threats against journalists.
- To monitor, document and report all acts and trends of violence, harassment and threats against journalists and other media practitioners in Sindh.
- To monitor the progress by government of Sindh in implementing the United Nations Plan of Action on Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
- To advocate for effective prosecution of crimes against journalists.
- To develop capacity-building programs and training workshops on safety, security and digital security of journalists and other media practitioners.
- To build strategic partnerships with media organizations, journalists unions, civil society groups, human rights organizations, international organizations and foreign missions to leverage global best practices and resources.
- To raise awareness through public events, seminars, conferences, campaigns and social media about the crucial role of free press in democratic society and importance of protecting journalists’ safety and rights.
- To engage law enforcement agencies, government officials, and other stakeholders to ensure effective investigation and prosecution of crimes against journalists and other media practitioners.
- To establish tech-based platforms such as helpline, mobile applications or web/cloud-applications for journalists to report threats or attacks.
- To operate a website to enable online complaint registration.
